“I surely hope not,” I told her. “But I'll check.

” “Don't open that door!” Melonhead screamed. Too late. I already had and the thing about water is that it moves fast.

“At least there's no water outside now,”Jonique said.

“But some is still coming down the steps,” I said.

“We've got to build a dam!” Melonhead said. We were dragging firewood logs down from the porch when Madam and Pop and my mom all came out the back door.

My mom looked at the yard and said, “What happened?”

“Water keeps squirrels away,” I said, pointing at the hoses which I am sorry to say we had not remembered to turn off.

“Excellently,” Melonhead said.

“Very excellently,” Jonique said.

And then I took a big gasp of air because I knew we were going to get a serious talk.

Pop looked at me and at Melonhead and at Jonique and then back at me and then at the bottom of the steps and I felt terrible. Then he said, “I CANNOT believe you did this. I hardly know what to say.”

“I do,” my mom said and I could tell from her forehead wrinkles that what she had to say was not going to be pleasing to hear.

But Pop kept talking. “I say this is fantastic! A first-rate idea! Congratulations to you all on your squirrel removing invention. I wish I had thought of it myself.”

“I'm sorry about the flooded basement,” I said.

“Flood shmud,” Pop said. “That is the sort of minor setback that happens to all great inventors.”

“They happen to me all the time,” Melon-head said.

Madam looked at Pop with her Madam eyes and then she looked at the steps and the water trickle going down them and she said, “Well, if water keeps squirrels away I guess we don't have to worry about the squirrels going into the basement.”

“Exactly,” Pop said. “Nobody wants squirrels in the basement. That would be unsanitary.”

“You are an optimist,” I told Madam. That word of the day means a person who thinks things are better instead of worse.

That made Madam laugh. “I must be,” she said.

The rest of the day was yuck because we had to mop the basement and sweep water out of the yard and you wouldn't believe how simply beat tired that makes you feel. Also famished. And by the time we finished cleaning, those squirrels were right back in that tree, flinging apricots at us.

“Madam,” I said. “I give up. I can't save these apricots.”

“I think that might be for the best,” she said.
